Inflatable SUP Pre-Season Checklist

🕐 Read time: 2 minutes

SUP season is nearly here. Before you head to the water and start pumping, it’s worth giving your board a quick once-over. A few simple checks now can save you problems later and help keep you safe and comfortable on the water. This checklist follows the same structure as our upcoming video and covers the key areas to check before your first paddle of the season.

Tools and Materials Needed

  • 🔹 Sup Pump
  • 🧼 Microfibre Cloth
  • 🪛 Screwdriver
  • 💧 August Race Sup-A-Clean Stand Up Paddle Board Cleaning Kit

Board & Seams

Start with the board itself.

  1. Unroll the board fully on a clean surface
  2. Inspect all seams for lifting, bubbles or loose glue
  3. Check the EVA deck pad for peeling edges or poor adhesion
  4. Clean the board to remove salt, sand and dirt

👉 Best practice: Inflate the board to full pressure and leave it for 24 hours. If it feels soft the next day, you’ve likely got a slow leak that needs patching. A clean board with a light UV protectant also helps keep the PVC flexible.

Fin Box and Hardware

Flip the board over and check the fin system.

  1. Clear sand and debris from the fin box channel
  2. Check the locking clip for white stress marks or brittleness
  3. Replace worn or cracked clips before they snap
  4. If using a US box, check that the screw and plate threads are clean
  5. Run your hand along the fin to check for sharp chips

⚠️ Warning: A damaged fin or clip can easily be lost underwater, and sharp edges can cause injury.

Leash (Critical)

Your leash is one of the most important safety items.

  1. Run your fingers along the full length of the cord
  2. Replace the leash if you feel any cuts or nicks
  3. Check swivels at both ends rotate freely
  4. Clean sand and fluff from the velcro cuff
  5. If using a waist belt, test the quick-release toggle

💡 Pro Tip: Be confident that the leash will hold and release instantly when needed.

Paddle Check

Your paddle does a lot of work, so it needs to be checked, too.

  1. Inspect the shaft for cracks or stress marks
  2. Check the blade edges for chips or damage
  3. Open and close the height adjuster clamp
  4. Tighten the clamp if the handle twists or slides

⚠️ Warning: A slipping paddle mid-stroke is frustrating and unsafe.

Safety Audit

Finish with a quick check of your safety gear.

  1. Open belt-pack PFDs and check the CO₂ cartridge for corrosion or expiry
  2. Inspect buoyancy aids for mould or broken buckles
  3. Squeeze foam panels to check they aren’t compressed or brittle
  4. Check your waterproof phone case using a tissue test

💡 Pro Tip: Being able to stay afloat and stay connected is just as important as the board itself.
